RAF Goxhill (USAAF Station 345), Lincolnshire

A remote site but extremely atmospheric. This memorial is located at a cross-roads to the immediate north-east of the village of Goxhill itself and to the north of the airfield site.

The propellor blade is one recovered from a P-38, based at Goxhill and crashed locally honours, amongst others, the crews of the 78th Fighter Group.

The first two photographs were taken in 2005 and the third, 2007. In between these two visits, there seems to have been some attempt at removing the P-38 blade. There was same debate generated on the Key Publishing forums at the time. It can be seen there but for some reason, I can't transfer the link across at the moment.

That notwithstanding, it is a superb memorial.

My grandmother served at Goxhill when the Americans first arrived, nice to see that the place has a memorial. When she talks about Goxhill (which isnt very often) she talks about the Americans with a secret smile on her face (one of those smiles that say i know something you dont) but at the same time she claims and i quote "B***** Americans they used to drop bombs anywhere!!!"

What she means by this statement i'm not really sure. It could be that she saw the wrong end of an American bomb and got away with it or she saw an American bomb do something else? I dare say the real answer will stay with her forever but the Americans are the only thing she ever swears about!!!!
