View Full Version : Helston Road Sign
Helston, Cornwall. Birthplace of Guy Gibson
We couldn't find any other association than this sign !!
I think you'll find he lived in Porthleven (just south of Helston town on the coast) and I understand there is a memorial of some sort there. I believe he was born in India, his mother being from Porthleven.
There is a report in today's (Sat 16th July 2011) Western Morning News that Porthleven Council are looking to create a new memorial for Guy Gibson in the centre of the village, such as at the Bickford-Smith Institute (the building with clock tower by the harbour). They are hoping to have it in place by Spring 2012 and invite the current CO of 617 Sqn down to do the unveiling. I can't find the report on their website or I'd have posted a link.
I also believe there is a granite memorial in Porthleven Cemetery to Guy Gibson and he's also listed on the village war memorial with a cross next to his name for his VC. I'm sure a google image search would turn up some pics that might give you the exact wording. If you've found Gibson Way you're not far from the cemetery.
A very, very belated thankyou EDGDZTCW for that information. I remember at that time we were on a touring holiday, it was hissing-down with rain, the few people that were around to ask either didn't know of Guy Gibson or had no knowledge of any memorial, and the girlfriend had other ideas... [Garden shops]..whoopee !! CornwallPhill, Many thanks also for your post of latest information. It's a long way from here, but I will try to get down for the 2012 dedication if you could inform us of the exact date as and when known. Best Wishes, Paul.
@Airfields Man, Will try and keep my ear to the ground and post the details on here.
Many thanks for that CornwallPhil. Much appreciated
Managed to get to Porthleven today and take a few photos...
Road sign in both English and Cornish!
Memorial stone in Porthleven Cemetery. Gibson is actually buried near his crash site in Steenbergen, Holland.
Nice touch to have the profile of the Lancaster
Memorial stone is half way down the middle section of the cemetery.
And a few more
From the town war memorial which is half way up the hill overlooking the harbour
Porthleven honours their famous son. Gibson's mother was a Porthleven girl. Gibson moved there in 1924, went to school in Penzance for a while, and then when at boarding school spent his summer holidays back in Porthleven.
It seems his name was added later than the rest of the World War Two dead.
Many thanks for showing those photographs CornwallPhil, vey good indeed. Looks like you had better weather for it than we did yesterday. Cheers. Paul.
