View Full Version : Alconbury Airfield Memorials
Alconbury Church plaque.
I photographed this at the time as the one above. A fair bit of reflection, But the wording says, In Memory of those of the 8th American Air Force Stationed in this parish who gave their lives in the cause of humanity.
Photo of the plaque on the guardhouse - 1 July 2007
Same plaque - April 2012
Abbots Ripton Depot Memorial Plaque - April 2012
Desert Shield / Desert Storm Memorial - April 2012
Memorial to Capt. Makowski and 1st Lt. Danielson - April 2012
This memorial used to be on the wall of the guardroom but was taken down a number of years ago. It was then put up in Pathfinder House, Huntingdon but has since been taken down again. It is currently in store somewhere in the Huntingdon / Alconbury area. Hopefully one day it will be returned and put on display again somewhere on the airfield.
are there any memorials either on station (I doubt it) or in local churches to note the sacrifices of the RAF units that served there and lost crews?
Any such memorials would more properly be placed at Wyton in the main, as the RAF units operating out of Alconbury during WWII prior to the USAAF taking over (12, 15, 40, 139 and 156 Squadrons) were headquartered at Wyton and simply used Alconbury as the dispersed satellite strip.
with regards to my Q, I'll take that as a no ;-)
