The first three photographs were taken about 2001, The next four a couple or so years later. Why the first photograph of the original plaque is out of focus i don't know? it was a new film and was in my camera for a while, by the time i got it developed and discovered this the plaque had been nicked !! You can see the outline of this around the new plaque. This is at Alma Road in Windsor.

As an ex Windsor resident I've been following the progress of this & will be there with my camera when it's all finished has anyone else been keeping up with this story?
A full size replica of a hurricane in that park will certainly stand out.

Hurricane for Alexandra Park
Go ahead has been given for a life size WW2 Hawker Hurricane to be placed in Alexandra Park as a permanent memorial to Sir Sidney Camm, the designer of this astounding aeroplane. Sidney Camm was born in Windsor and the planes were produced in vast numbers at a factory in langley during the Second World War. If you would like to donate anything towards the £50,000 needed to get the replica plane, please contact Stuart Leigh-Davies of the Camm Memorial Trust on 07760 315505
Great idea to have a full size replica. Be nice if it was a Mk1 in the markings of the first sqaudron to recieve it.

From the Windsor Observer Newspaper.
Sir Sydney Camm, an aeronautical engineer who lived in Alma Road, designed the Hawker Hurricane fighter in 1934, as well as 52 other different types of aircraft.
The jet was used in the Battle of Britain and is said to have been a vital defence for the outnumbered Royal Air Forces.
Spokesman for The Sydney Camm Memorial Committee, Stuart Leigh-Davies said: "This is a fitting memorial for a local genius, an unassuming man who time and time again, when this country was in need saved its backside.
"This will serve as a reminder to the people of Windsor that the world's greatest aeronautical engineer was born in the town."
Mr Leigh-Davies presented the plans for the 9.55m by 12.19m Mark 1 Hurricane aircraft replica to Windsor's planning panel on Wednesday (26/11) at the Guildhall.
Councillors voted unanimously in support of the proposal. Cllr Colin Rayner said: "I'm delighted to support this application because it will enhance the wonderful Alexandra Gardens."
The memorial, which would be illuminated by four lamps, will be situated on the western end of Barry Avenue. It is expected to cost around £50,000 and could be in place as early as next summer. Sir Sydney, who died in 1966 at the age of 73, was knighted for his work in 1953.
The committee will now start working towards securing funding for the project.
The clever reporter has managed to change a Hurricane into a jet but at least it is as PNK suggested it's going to be a Mk1 Hurricane.

Has this spokesman for the Sydney Camm Memorial Committee, Stuart Lee-Davies never heard of RJ Mitchell, Geoffrey De Havilland, Roy Chadwick and the great Barnes Wallis, who also saved this countrys backside, time and time again, as he put it. Anyone seen the latest Glenn Miller theory ? Apart from crashing in the Chiltern Hills, getting bombed down into the channel, being a spy sending coded messages to the germans in his music, dying in the arms of a French prostitute he was now an American agent sent to france to meet-up with the Germans who worshipped him and overthrow Hitler and his cronies. But he was caught by Hitlers top body guard, tortured and thrown onto a street. Forget which sunday comic it was in now...

Further to the notice on the post box in Windsor. On the 9th September 1961, I was serving at RAF Hendon and was on the ground handling party for a Westland Whirlwind helicopter of BEA, G-ANFH, which did a 50th anniversary commemorative airmail run between Hendon and Windsor, I still have one of the special envelopes carried on the flight, together with a photo that I took of the helicopter at Hendon. The helicopter pad was situated quite close to where the main gate to the RAF Museum now stands. The Centenary of this event will be in less than two years time, how time flies.

I have been trying to find this plaque, or similar, as shown in Jean Gardner's book ; Aviation Landmarks. I've called-at the Long Walk, in Windsor over the last few weeks in-search of this reported memorial. Half-way along the 'Walk' is a barrier secured by the Police. After showing one of them my book with the photograph, he told that it is still there, as he had seen it a while ago. Even giving me directions for parking to view this plaque. It's not there !! The photograph shown is one that I took from my computor screen earlier by digital camera. It was sent to me by a lady from the Windsor Local history Group. She told me that she brought this subject up at last Friday's meeting after receiving my request. Everyone was quite vague concerning this plaque, she said . As far as this lady know's this photograph is from 1974-ish. Page 26 of said book, REF. :-D

Hi bucc'66, There is no-reason why you would have seen that plaque during your many tour's of the 'Long Walk', unless you were aware of it's existence. There are plenty of likely-looking plaques fixed to the railings now, but they are all the same, No Dog fouling etc. What a pity that you didn't know of any-such plaque during your walks along here at that time.

Well as and when you do I hope that you get as nice-a day as I did last friday. Also don't forget to see the Gustav Hamel plaque at the long-walk, nor the commerative blue post box, this is close to a castle that's near-by.
