Cold war bunker - Norwich

I know this is not an airfield, but thought it might be of some interest.

A businessman said last night he is in a race against time to get a Cold War bunker in Norwich listed and saved from demolition.
see the video and story here.

Sorry should have put this in non airfield section. :(

I'vemoved it across to the non-airfield sites for you.

It is next to my ATC Sqn and they have already started work demolishing it. One of those things I always meant to take a photo of - hinsight is a wonderful thing....

Indeed, demolition started back in the summer.
The annoying thing is that the developers will just flatten the site and then do nothing, probably for years in the current climate.
They were in a great hurry to flatten it before there was even a chance of getting it listed - they don't even have planning permission for the site so far!
It's a shame as it was an interesting place and looked to be in good condition, I hope an enthusiast had an opportunity to remove any interesting items fittings before the demo started...

And a few months ago there was an item in the Telegraph about the lack of bunkers in the UK should Russia start to be a real threat again!

Yes, I saw that piece as well.
The fact is, the government does not see nuclear war as anything other than a slightly crazy theory these days, and anyway they have their own deep level bunker just in case!

There is a very pertinent point in the Civil Defence Manual of Basic Training:

Measures for safeguarding the civil population against the effects of war which these publications describe, have become an essential part of the defensive organisation of this country. The need for them is not related to any belief that war is imminent. It is just as necessary that preparations for Civil Defence should be made in time of peace as it is that preparations should be made for the Armed Forces.

I like the theory the local councils would move to a bunker in the case of nuclear attack. This begs a few questions.

a) How will they get to these in 3mins (assuming that is not a made up scare time)
b) What can they do as there will be no infrastructure
c) Who are they kidding - the general popuation will either be dust, crispy of frantically applying Boots Aftersun cream.

As for building a personal shelter under the stairs and staying there for a month!

Someone did tell me that when those bunkers were sold off(such as the one near St Andrews)there is a clause in the contract that states they can be requestioned if needed.

In the event of an attack, at least the SSR is standing ready:

I remember being told not long after I joined up (78) about a store of steam locos for use in war, I thought at the time it was another of the myths about what was in store. Seems I was wrong1

Now is there any truth about the 20 Vulcans that "dissapeared"?

Yup, they are down there too.

Elvis and Lord Lucan polish all the locomotives once a week, then play darts.

I have reason to disbelieve that statement Al; but then I always was a cynic :)

I've recently discovered that there was an RAF site at Catton, Norwich. REF supplied hand drawn plans for the site which someone gave to him but i'd like to find out more on this site. The recent history is that it was the HQ for the local ROC posts, this was only recently demolished and one of only two huts remaining is now home of 231 (Norwich) SQN and HQ Norfolk and Suffolk wing ATC, the other is a roofless derelict shell.
can anyone out there please help with information and even any photos of the site.

MODS, for tidyness and ease of tracking I suggest that the above post is moved to Non-airfield Sites.

Don't worry jason, I am interested in any responses!

I was tickled by the 'exploded' view caption on the ROC post drawing. Very apt if nukes had come in!
