Good to see those Praesta, be worth putting into one of the audits somehow (should be a list of how many and where built).
What was the 'protected' C like?

I spy a mistake (1924). MM like St Evil but use RC instead of asbestos

The protected C-Type had smaller windows (in height) on the side elevation, though much longer than the general hipped 10-bays. It also did away with a lot of the brick abutments to the door "outriggers" I believe, though stand to be corrected, that it also had frangible panels in the roof to direct blast upwards. I don't know where this info came from, I had it on a Word Doc on my PC - I think it was from when I was trying to categorically ID Newton's C types. With reference to 2134/24 - Gabled, put that down to fat fingers and vanity with glasses! As Norwich Paul points out - it should have beed 2134/34. 1924 would put us well into the A Hangar time frame

Is there anyway we can illustrate the different types, with the drawing numbers?
I'm still confused as to where the 'austerity' type (St Eval) comes in.
It would be good to have a definative thread on these iconic hangars, with the above info, pics, and where they remain etc.

What is the drawing no. of what I call the 'mini C', you know the 4 door workshop version?

I feel I have to defer to Norwich Paul on this one. I'm getting out of my depth! I think there is a protected C at Ternhill or Shawbury which I've seen on my travels.

Lot of good information here, although I don't think it gives a good relationship between particular hangar styles and their drawing numbers.

I think this is quite a complicated subject as drawing numbers seem to vary with with different annex layouts, which may not be obvious from the outside. It would be really good to see a definitive list though if anyone is able to draw all the info together.

The baby C is the ARS shed at the Service Flying Training Schools and the Central Flying School at Upavon.

There are loads and loads of drawings, from foundation plans, steel framework, roof trusses and roof girders (gable and hipped versions), roof cladding, annexes for:

heavy bomber
medium bomber
light bomber
squadron hangar with HQ (for all the above)
squadron hangar without HQ (for all the above)
fifth shed (heavy bomber stations)
single-engine fighter
twin-engine fighter

plus doors, setting out plans (individual stations), wall cladding etc etc and so it goes on.

Then there is the austerity C of which there are two main constructional types and so the it gets even more complicated.

Sorry to be so tireome but that is the way it is.

Maybe we dont have to get THAT in depth, and I realise there are loads of different smaller drawing nos. (same fror any building), but as individuals we could start listing the hangars we know of and hopefully try and back fill with the basic drawing nos. from post #2.

Example:

St Athan 4 x brick built, 2 x 12 bay and 2 x 15 bay
Hullavington 3 x brick 12 bay, 1 x ARS
Cosford 2 x metal clad 15 bay

But we need to know which nos. (or even type!) apply to which basic design.
