Hi Folks,

I have been looking at your website on a few occasions and have decided to join you.

I have always had an interest in the Second World War and for the last 6 months I have been travelling around visiting various sites connected to the Second World War in Northern Ireland.

In doing so i think I have all of the Northern Ireland wartime airfields represented and indeed I have looked 'over the fence' in some cases to nearby Heavy Anti-Aircraft Batteries or indeed the occasional Royal Air Force jetty for rescue boats.

I hope that we will be able to assist each other with information relating to airfields and I look forward to being involved.

Cheers,
ww2ni;)

Welcome to the forum. Be careful it is very addictive! I caught a bad case of Bombing ranges since I joined :)

Speaking of which, I don't suppose you know anything about Bombing and Gunnery ranges in Northern Ireland? As they are not normally marked on maps either old or new they are difficult to pinpoint and the wartime Grid references are no help as they don't convert to Irish grid properly.

Hi PNK,

I know of a few Bomb Ranges which can be found at maps.ehsni.gov.uk/MapViewer/Default.aspx

There are Bombing Range Targets mentioned at Portstewart, On the northern shore of Lough Neagh and the western shore of the Ards Peninsula near Greyabbey.

I will see what I can find. - Make sure to take a look at my website as i have photographs of the butts at Ballyhalbert, Maghaberry and Greencastle / Cranfield included.

Thanks for the welcome.

If you have any info with any Irish Grid refs that would be great. Could you post anything in the Bombing Ranges section, maybe create a Northern Ireland thread?

I registered for OSNI a few years back and it has some good older maps with airfields but nothing postwar for Kilkeel/Greencastle. The NIEA viewer in you link is great especially if you get the scale right and it shows 1960/70s era maps.

I like your website. It covers a wide range of subjects so hopefully will generate a lot of interest. I might have something on HAA sites in the Carrickfergus area, but don't hold me to it!

Hi Folks,

My website is called 'The Second World War in Northern Ireland' and can be found at http://www.ww2ni.webs.com

Re the Carrickfergus HAA I was in that area a few days ago taking pictures. The one you mention may be at Seamount just past Kilroot on the way towards Whitehead.

Good site and I have plenty of pictures, some of which will be on my website soon. - On the same trip I was at another HAA site on Islandmagee which includes a Radar platform and then I went up around the Ballymena area to a few of the old Refugee camps where Gibraltar Citizens stayed during the war.

Much remains and I got plenty more piccies - Including some Second World War vintage litter which had Navy Cut cigarette box!!

Cheers,
ww2ni

Welcome ww2ni , NI is generally overlooked when it comes to WW2 aviation so you can help to fill the gaps as queries are raised.
