As Chairman of the Board of Trustees, it is with regret that I have to inform you of the immediate closure of the RAF Air Defence Radar Museum. The decision has been forced on us following our annual fire inspection when some issues concerning fire escapes, which have previously been seen as acceptable risks, have now caused the Defence Fire Risk Management Authority to serve an enforcement notice on the Museum Manager through OC RRH Neatishead. I, my fellow Trustees and the Manager regret having to make this decision and sincerely hope that it is only temporary. Certainly the Manager and I will be actively engaging with the RAF and MOD authorities to find a way forward. I will advise you further in due course.

RAF Air Defence Radar Museum to Reopen
The RAF Air Defence Radar Museum at Neatishead, near Horning is to reopen in April 2011, after improvements to the fire escapes. The museum was closed in August after MoD fire officers carried out an inspection.

The museum has announced a fund raising drive to buy the museum building from the MOD.

REF:
I like the photos. Was posted to RAF neatishead in 1970 after tour on Bloodhound. Went off to Elliot at boreham wood and Marconi at Chelmsford to learn how the system worked and then back to Neatishead as engineering supervisor in SLEWC (Standby local early warning and control) where we gradually took over from Marconi. Left in late 73 as Ch Tech and took voluntary redundancy.

Been back a couple of times and I am a "friend" of the museum. Well worth the trip. Pity the RAF removed all the "radar office" kit (elliot computer system,Marconi display controllers and ssr decoder etc)when they left.

Yes, that was the SLEWC building , It gave me shivers when I saw the pictures of the opps room for the first time since 1974.I had two teams of fitters. One did data handling and the other team displays. The Supervisor was the only one trained on the whole system.I was given the task of makeing the Tote Displays.5499 It was quite a responsibility to be in charge of such a complex and at that time cutting edge equipment. Here is the only pic I have of me in uniform taken at my bungalow in Coltishall village on the day I went in to be Demobbed. We all celebrated at The Ferry Inn at Horning.

I do need to work on my photography and not just use my iPhone and iMovie to edit everything!

TBH i'm not really sure who hold the keys to the hole. There is a very small contingent of RAF on Neatishead who work in a compound on the camp but I would suspect they have no control over a visit, I could be wrong but I do have a contact or two up there who maybe able to give me an answer

Not a bad price really. Can see interest from Hall Farm residence if were not careful. Would have made a great Caravan Park with all the infrastructure, been a few years since the Mess has been used operationally so some damage will be evident. Hope they sorted out the Asbestos in the R12 before they sell it.
