View Full Version : CHADWELL HEATH (Essex) - HAA SITE
Just flew (GE!) over Chadwell Heath and noticed that despite the extensive gravel (?) extraction all around that the site is intact. Is there a preservation order?
That is quite a find.
Like an oasis in a desert! It certainly has been left in a good condition. I might try to get down there for a few photos in the next couple of weeks.
Chadwell Heath Gun Site Conservation Area
The area lies to the east of Whalebone Lane North at Marks Warren Farm and comprises a complex of structures which are the remains of a World War II anti-aircraft battery.
CHADWELL HEATH GUN SITE CONSERVAITON AREA IS NO LONGER DESIGNATED
I found this on another site. The look from above on 'Flashearth' is a lot better than these ground views Peter!. Photos and description are just over halfway down on this page:
Blimey!!! That's amazing eh?

All the best,
I thought I had read about it somwhere as being protected or restored. Maybe that was it?
There are many sites still around some barely hanging on. Erith Marshes still has some good remains. The trouble is they look better from the air, to my mind anyway.
Thanks for the inputs. It was (is) as significant site highly representative of the London AA defences and so I hope that it will continue to be preserved.
Chadwell Heath is where West Hams training ground is located!
And it's where FlashEarth has a tiling issue! Coincidence? :-) http://www.flashearth.com/?lat=51.569942&lon=0.147628&z=18.3&r=0&src=msl
Was laughing, seeing my "home-town" come to the fore !!!!!!!!!! (esp' on an aviation-site).
Being "Chadwell-Heath" born & bred, I used to go over there when I was younger.
(it's on the right-hand-side, opposite corner from the 'Moby-Dick' (Whale) Pub, near 'Bonzers' !!!!!!!)
One of my mates in Goodmayes (who came with us as a group, during the AiX Bircham visit) made notes on the site back in the 1980's & told me that he had (or seen) a picture of Winston (Churchill) himself visiting the site (IIRC).
Next time I'm on the phone, I'll ask him.
(p.s. yeah, don't I know about the West-Ham 'training-ground' between the 'Toll-Gate' & Jutsums Lane; was 1st place I ever got stopped speeding in a '67 Sunbeam Rapier fastback(watch Jason smile) on the way to pick up my G/f on a trip to RAF-Hendon in 1981 'bout two years after I'd passed my test !)
