Hi Guys

Just joined up and looking forward to some lively debates on airfields and the likes. I have a reasonable knowledge of airfields in Wiltshire, Hampshire and Dorset. My pet subject is the airfields occupied by 9th USAAF during WW2

Welcome Ranger. 9th USAAF has been very poorly documented in comparison with the Mighty Eighth, as I'm sure you're aware.

I did find a useful book in the TNA library - Condensed Analysis of the Ninth Air Force in the ETO. (Washington: USAF Office of Air Force History 1984) ISBN: 9780912799131. These are on sale S/H for reasonable prices from the USA. but none in the UK.

Hey Ranger - been to Ramsbury and met up with Roger Day? He's know an awful lot about Ramsbury and Membury.

Welcome to the group,
Tommy

The only book I have, apart from the After the Battle one is by Ken Rust (I think) I haven't dug it out for many a long year (at least 20!!!) but since it was the only book on the 9th it was invaluable. I bought it in the 1970's in the Charing Cross Road. I remember it because the bookseller was in one of those old fashioned bookshops and it took him ages to write all the details in his sales ledger - in ink!

Found some records of 9th Air Force Bombing Ranges in Essex though :)

Just ordered the book in post #2 - under a tenner seemed good from the USA.

John Hamlin's book is good. Link (http://www.uk-discount.co.uk/johnhamlin/strike.html)

Hi Guys

Thanks for the welcome. the airfield research game is not new to me, been at it for over 20 years. Did a lot of work with Alan Brown down in the New forest area in the 1990,s (I think I am mentioned in some of his books about the New Forest Airfields) was a founding member of the RAF Ibsley group, Chairman for 2 years, erected USAAF memorial at Ibsley 1995. I was a member of Buddies of the Ninth for 15 years, secretary for the last years before it closed down 2005. look forward to being on this site, looking to arrange trip to Lakenheath sometime.

regards Ranger
