Excellent Blackadder - didn't know this existed.

They were testing H2S. One of the passengers was Alan Blumlein (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Blumlein); I remember from my BBC days, he was one of the boffins directly responsible for the development of TV in the UK, plus many other innovations. A brilliant guy.
