I remember the incident well. I was then with RAF Bomb Disposal based at Bicester but we were commuting daily to Chalgrove. On that day on our return journey we ran into traffic congestion but were led down the shoulder by a police escort who saw the red wings on the Land Rover and we found ourselves pulled into the crash site. Not a pretty sight. It was not until much later upon return to Bicester that we found that out what had happened from weeping WRAF girls who worked at Upper Heyford where they packed multiple parachutes daily for RAF training.
