RAF Sango was a radar site in Sutherland located not far from Cape Wrath and was near the village of Durness. When I was stationed at Tain we used to man up Garvie Island range, our OP was located on top of what had apparently been the radar head. The domestic site was converted to a craft village.

Now what can anyone tell me about RAF Sango ie when did it open and when did it close? Due to its remote location it cant have been a popular posting.

May have been a Gee station rather than Chain Home

According to Dobinson it was an 'Advanced Chain Home' and later got Chain Home Low. ACH was being built in 1940
CHL was commissioned summer 1941 to watch northern convoy routes.

An extant tower base at Sango - Chain Home:

Incidentally, Martin Burney informs me that the correct name is Advance Chain Home (not Advanced). In other words it's at the sharp end.

I think the ACH was built in advance of the main CH site.

In January 1941 Sango had an ACH whilst awaiting construction of the main CH.

In October 1945 the CH and CHL were operational but scheduled for reduction to C&M.

Building Radar says the Portmor ACH became the Kilkenneth reserve though I think they moved the equipment.

Think there are 2 distinct sites in the area. RAF Sango is not the same as the site on Faraid Head (closer to Durness), which is the site of range control for Garvie Island Range and Cape Wrath Naval Bombardment Range.

Sango is on the East side of Durness whereas the later ROTOR station is West of the village.
