I have wondered about these designations and Ron Batley of the Thorpe Abbotts Tower Museum is also interested. He has been doing some investigation of remaining hut bases and has noted some that were divided into four equal sections (Nissen), others divided in half, and yet others divided in half end to end and then one section of that was divided lengthwise giving you three rooms (if that makes sense). Is there anything that defines these various types? The Nissens divided into 4 sections were located on Site 1 at Thorpe Abbots and are identified on the Site Plan as "Officers Quarters (Type "A")". There are also Sergeants Quarters Type A - would those also have been divided into four rooms? Would the Type B and Type C have had a standard internal layout?
If you ever get to Thorpe Abotts, look Ron up. He is very interested in these buildings and quite knowledgeable. I have tried to get him to visit this site, but computers are not really his thing. But we will keep trying!
