Reviewed in Airfield Review issue 125

Although mentioned in various regional airfield histories such as the Action Stations series, details on the Shorts production site on Windermere have always been lacking, with its actual location being ill-defined in some cases. This has now been rectified with this excellent book which fully describes how the factory came to be built and the production activities there. A total of thirty five Sunderlands were built, whilst others were received for modification and repair, all using Windermere for take-offs and landings. As well as the factory history, the operational use of the aircraft is described, accompanied by extensive appendices.

The book is extensively illustrated with the vast majority never having been published before. There is particularly good coverage of the factory complex including the large assembly hangar, and show all stages of their life from contruction to removal. The main assembly hangar for example was re-erected at Kirkby in Merseyside to house a chemical works and wasnít scrapped until the 1980s. The book includes a comprehensive site plan including internal plans of the main buildings, whilst there is also a plan of the village of Calgarth that was built to accommodate the factory workers.

Although seemingly expensive, the book is very well produced on high quality paper and is an excellent example of what can be achieved by local researchers. Highly recommended.
