Possible RAF Observation Post at Obinan

The book 'Loch Ewe during World War II' refers to a RAF observation post at Opinan / Obinan.

This appears to be the site, it lied at the end of the of the road from Laide.

There are two concrete bases about 4m apart. The lower one at NG 87896 97187 which is about 12m x 5m.

The second is behind it at NG 87887 97196 and is the same size though there are small concrete bases at each end. One 2800mm x 2050mm and the other 3800mm x 2150mm (800mm from the large base).

One the hill behind this there is a concrete base at NG 87875 97228 1960mm x 2600mm. The corners of the side facing 120 degrees Magnetic appear to have rounded corners but that could just be the way that the concrete has collapsed.

Ello,

Over in Gloucestershire for a week and went on another one of my wanders. Came across this:

I'm guessing it's an MG pit for an AA gun but I've never seen one before and not entirely sure what would of been fitted to the spindle in the centre.

The whole thing is filled with about 4-5 feet of silt so it's about 6 feet deep in total I'd guess. The steps lead down and and underneath the concrete slab we could see the entrace to what I assume is an ammunition locker room.

Can anyone give me any idea as the land owner was curious. Would be nice to know what armament was fitted to it.

Hello all,

I'm a filmmaker, who for the last couple of years has been researching for a documentary about my dad, Douglas Percy Cannings who flew as a mid upper gunner in 100 squadron and 97 squadron. I'm lurking on here looking for old photos, info etc about his squadrons and crewmates. We'll be coming up to Waltham on 27th May to shoot some footage.
We've tracked down a good number of relatives so far from his crews for a reunion day at East Kirkby in July which is going to be an emotional day. This is a great resource, many thanks!
