    J Hangar - June 1978

I remember taking these two images very well as I walked the full length of the runway and I lost my standard lens between here and Kimbolton. The 125cc Susuki is mine - thats how I used to get around back then, doing about 10 airfields or more in a day. Although not on this ocassion as I spent hours trying to find my lens - never found it Great times though!

T2 hangars at Chelveston 7 November 1955. Note the T2s have their roof sheeting staggard which is typical of the first batch of T2s. Note too, the Quonset hut under construction.

Unfortunately this image is not mine and I have no idea who took it apart from it was 1974. The CT had gone before I could get to Chelveston.

Mark: Excelent pics yet again. Are they Phantom slipper tanks in the crates inside the J hangar - Sargent Fletchers?

Thank you. They could be, they were wing tanks for the RF-4s. One of our jobs as bomb loaders at Alconbury was to check on the war reserve material spread about the country. The Chelveston J-Style held several reserve wing tanks. I was told as a young airman if a war kicked off the Wash would become a pickle barrel due to the amount of F-4 tanks to be jettisoned there. I assumed this meant they would use that much external fuel taking off in full AB, popping the tanks over the wash, then using internal fuel throughout the mission. Then again it could have all been war stories.
