Nice shot, you can see Ermine Street cutting across the lower part of the site.

Found this report dated 19th Jan which states Scampton is secure and will not be closed, but if everything currently at Scampton is moving to Waddo and Coningsby why will it be kept open?

There are several reasons why it will not close possibly.

    1. Because of the A15 potentially having to be straightened again.

    2. Location due to being to the east.

    3. Cost of closing it as ive read on another forum.

    4. Not sure on this but maybe traces of radiation from blue steel being left so have to keep the site for so long after.

If anyone can correct me or agree with any of the above please i would be interested on any comments that you may have.

Reason why it will be kept open is to give the arrows airspce to practice in, they need a clear patch of airspace they can use.

I beleive the plan is for the arrows to be based at Waddington and to use the airspace at Scampton. Back in 93 when the first rumours of Scamptons closure were doning the rounds the RAF did look at basing the arrows at Barkston Heath.

Why would closing the airfield have any effect on the airspace above it, does closing the station mean they also lose the airspace?

No, they can keep the airspace.

So if they need the airspace for the Reds, but not the station itself and any remaining units are moving to Waddo and Cby, why keep it open? It will just be another empty station there seems no need to keep it open, it just seems odd to me.

Lets hope they have some good plans for it due to it's history? cant see it though

They need the control tower and runway while the Reds are playing in the overhead. They will also have a fire truck or two and crash ambulance in case there is some form of incident. The Reds also video every practice so they need a photog on the ground, and he will have to be back at Waddo in just a few minutes after each practice so the crews have the vid for the debrief. When they were at Cranwell I think they couriered the photog across in a Bulldog/Tucano/Firefly or whatever they could get their hands on. Hence, they need airfield facilities as well as airspace.

HawkEye001 - I wouldn't worry about the lack of comment on pictures. I look at all posts and especially the pictures. Failure to comment is not always a result of lack of appreciation, more a lack of anything useful to say, at least in my case.

Do you have a date for this pic?
