Superb picture, XM576 was deliver in June 1963 so it must be after that date. A quick search on the net reveals

'In May 1965, 576 crash-landed at Scampton after an asymmetric approach and was written-off'
    excerpt from http://www.avrovulcan.org.uk/gg/xm576_scampton.htm

On the subject of Scampton I got a free copy of the "dambusters" in the paper today. I wonder what name the dog will be given?

The building which contained JACIG was erected for use as the Blue Steel servicing bay. Was made of one and a half T2 hangars and built on the side of the electronics block if memory correct. JACIG accommodated in a portacabin 'city' built inside the largest part of the Blue Steel accommodation.

Speaking to a fellow that is still serving in RAF , asked him about Scampton and the general concensus is that the runway is about shot to bits and this is the major factor for the Reds move to Waddo in 2011. Apparently as others have said , they will retain the airspace over the airfield for practice. As for the hangars / buildings he doesn't know but thinks most will be sold off a la Hemswell. It all boils down to the usual subject MONEY !!

So why not resurface the runway or is there more to this story?
