Great photos Keith. That new runway really stands out doesn't it?
Thank you Richard, something I find of interest is the width of the original runways, compared with the width of the new usable runway, although we are talking very different aircraft sizes !
Do you know if what is now the Shipdham industrial estate, further along the road, was part of the wartime airfield ????
Keith.
Hi Keith
Yes the industrial estate was part of the airfield, there is at least two if not three T2 Hangars there and the control tower is still standing too. I think there is one or two other buildings there but I haven't found them yet.
The painting of the female looks a bit like Maureen OHara.
Have you never seen the quiet man staring John Wayne? Ms Ohara(shes still alive) is an Irish actress, her second husband was CEO of an American airline and when he died she took over.
can anyone post the photo of Churchill by the fire place, would make a great comparison cheers![]()

wartime photo of Col Leon Johnsons HQ, most of the buildings in the fore ground still remain,if any of you guys are flying over the site would love a now photo!!
No exact date for these 1987 photographs of various buildings at Shipdham, that include the famous fireplace, a track to nowhere and a photograph of a photograph from within the Control Tower.
Hmm I hadn't seen that fireplace before. It's got a lot in common with this one photographed in the Medical Officers quarters at Stoke Heath (Tern Hill) c.1986.
Do we need a new category for building 'features' ?
Was there a drawing for Fireplaces, RAF Officers, for the comfort of?
