    Default Rochford / Southend

Reuters are reporting today that Southend Airport has been sold to the Stobart Group for 21m. No doubt one way out of their problems at Carlisle is to buy an airport somewhere else!

Here is the press release from Stobart Group. Beware, lots of financial mumbo-jumbo, but some interesting background to the acquisition:

They will have to write "Eddie Stobart" all over the top of the wings and paint a girl's name on the front!!!

    blimey how things change!...

I used to work in Carlisle for Ford Racing based on the Blackdyke Stobbies complex (now the 'Stobarts Rally Team') and it was all doom and gloom for the future (before Tinkler bought out the brand) so its nice to see things change.

I presume that in the report by 'Carlisle' airport they mean Brampton (where I lived) and the old MOD Carlisle?

JCB, lol had few friends with their names on waggons (Stephanie Simmonite and Rachel Simmonite and others) and you know you have made 'it' if your names on a stobbies waggon

Southend Spitfire, I am sorry but I don't have any photos of Southend Airport, but I will ask my mother. whose brother in law was a Fireman/Refueler at the airport for many many years until he retired a couple of years back. He may have some I could copy and post on here.
Is the Air Training Corp unit is still there? as they had a Rolls Royce Merlin engine on a pallet at the airport end of the hut. I do remember there was even talk about trying to hook it up and start it up. A thing which I very much doubted would ever happen.
I heard last weekend when I was at Duxford ( last visit was over 30 yrs ago)and one of their exhibits came from the museum at Southend Airport, I know that the museum has shut down, Do you know if the ut down but what happened to all the aircraft that were there, are they still there, as I know many of them were definately not airworthy, and what about the Vulcan bomber, is that still there or did it finally get restored ?. Sorry I have lots of memories of Southend Airport and am glad to see that finally the runaway is being extended to allow better aircraft in and rebuilding the tower I think was definately required, it had been promised for many years but never got done. Is the beacon still in the same place and working, I was told by one of the crew of a Viscount (thats giving away my age a bit) that it could be seen clearly 40 miles away over the channel.
