Leavesden taken on 24/03/09. Runway still visible.

As a young boy living close to Leavesden, I distinctly remember large signs proclaiming Bristol Siddeley placed at the boundary fence. This would have been between about 1960, between the de Havilland and Rolls-Royce periods.

I was also taken to an open day there about the same time - but, sadly, I can't remember a damn thing about it.

1972 - A good year for photographing airfields. The Hunting Surveys DC3 must have been a shakey camera mount.

Great book out on the history of the airfield http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/i...266239&s=books I did my first solo there 11 Aug 1979 in Piper Cherokee 180 G-ATRU of Britannia Airways. My instructor was Cpt Alan Johnson. In those days we could train at Luton Airport (still had grass runways)but all solos had to be done away at Leavesden.
