    RAF Windrush help wanted

    Hi All

I took a trip over to the former RAF Windrush on Sunday and came across this.

Now it's either a pill box with a anti aircraft mount in the center or is it the station battle HQ
any thoughts or help on this would be great. Also what are the 2 large concrete letter
in the grass, they are a U and R.

    Thanks Mike

Does the central well look like this?

If so it is a fairly standard FW3/27 pillbox. These had the central AA mounting. One of my favorite pillboxes is this one in Suffolk. It is a type 27 and still has all the associated trenches and earthworks still surviving.

It is a Pillbox, probably as Mike says, a Type 22. But, it appears to have 8 sides (octagonal) so could be a modified local version.

The Battle Headquarters is (or was?) adjacent to the Watch Office. About here:

    Edit: Nice pics Mike.

Heres an aerial shot of it in situ:

I've got a site plan but it's missing the schedule of buildings but the pillbox isn't on it. I assume construction of defensive works was down to the LDA.

If it has a central well with the anti aircraft mounting then it is a FW3/27 not a FW3/22.

    Thanks guys
I'll re-name the titles on my FlickR site to match the new info.

It still looks as if it has 8 sides.

The are the Airfield Ident letters, often referred to as the Pundit code. There are a few threads in these forums on the subject.
'UR' is confirmed for Windrush in Dave Smith's British Military Airfields - 1939-45
