Hi.....

Im new to the forum.... my pet subject is Heston..... so here is the start of a Heston thread!!

Heston Airport was famous for having a 15ft diameter clock sunken into the ground just in front of the control tower (just Google Images “Heston Airport’s clock” if you haven’t seen pictures of it before).

The main Heston complex was demolished in 1978, but I have been told the clock was removed and ended up in a museum, probably in storage. I have a series of photos taken during the demolition and the clock certainly isn’t there, so there may be some truth in this.

Does anyone know any more? Anyone ever seen it??

I updated a section on Woodason model makers.
They were based at the site making models initially for WWII military then for film making after the war.

unfortunately I cannot find any info after WWII.
The only info I found was that racing commenced on there perimeter track around the aerodrome but I cannot verify dates etc.

I have had this email along with the attached photo, can anyone help locate where the photo was taken?

I am the vehicle registrar of the Berkeley Enthusiasts Club, we are
currently researching a photo of some Berkeley Cars parked in front of an aircraft hangar in 1957/58 but we are in need of some help in identyfying the location which we think is in Beds, Cambs or Essex . The hangar appears to have an almost triangular steep roof and sliding cream painted timber doors . Any clues?

Thank you very much for the information , I never thought about Heston even though I know it in outline terms --Of course the hangar is now completely surrounded by other buildings but I am pleased to know it is listed
If you look carefully at the Old Warden photos you will see that their no 1 hangar has the same doors--all 1930s style !

This is a long shot but do you think any of your gang could date the photo !?

Any ideas when it was taken, obvioulsy it is thought around 1957/58.

I'm interested in Heston during 1939 and 1940 when if was home to the photographic reconnaissance units. Also interested in the Lord Nuffield-funded Napier Heston Type 5 speed record challenger. I have plans from 1944 and a good aerial photo showing bomb damage after the major raid in 1940 that led to the decision to move to Benson. Anyone having any information or other plans of the airport, or an interest in the material I have gathered can contact me via PM.
