Long Marston

Heres a few photos i took today of the control tower at Long Marston & a couple of the buildings nearby. Been past the airfield several times and i'm aware that there are quite a number of surviving buildings still standing around the site. (I actually spent the entire night on the airfield last summer during the Global Gathering dance music festival.. i was a bit to 'out of it' to notice then though )

I was a bit rushed for time and the weather was terrible today though so it was just a quick visit as i was making a quick de-tour on the way home from Stratford.


The tower area was totally deserted and silent although a micro light club operate from here.There was a fair bit of activity out on the runways with lorry and bus tuitions going on today that i noticed..




It has to be said Marston's tower could do with a lick of paint pretty soon.

I'm fascinated by the curved roof building in the 'last but one' photos above.
Can't remember seeing one elsewhere, except it's vaguely similar to the one I posted here. (entry Fri Aug 8 200.

lets not forget of course the fact that Long Marston is YET ANOTHER airfield faced with being wiped off the map with one of the goverments "planet freindly" Eco towns!! Aaaaaaaaaaghhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stevie, re the last image; does the blast wall at the rear of the curved roof building cover an entrance for that building or is there another structure behind?

I think that I found it on satellite but could you post a location link?

Looking at the curved roof building again it appears to have the remains of a chimney and maybe a wall at the window end. Also should the windows have a lintel? What I'm getting at is that it appears to be an adapted building rather than original, probably postwar using the shelter parts as a roof. Long Marston's is quite a bit smaller than Woodhall Spa. They do look similar but not in dimensions.

The curved building is a Ctesiphon Hut

They were a general purpose hut known to have been used as maintenance unit workshops, camera stores. office, guardrooms and POL store. Wethersfield had 12 or 14 at one point, but they are as easy to knock down as they were to put up so not many survive.

The irony, given the current state of affairs in Iraq, is that the type was named after the ancient palace of Shapur 1 near Ctesiphon, Baghdad. http://www.atlantiwall.co.uk

I am not so sure. According to the bible it should look more saggy between the ribs and the Wethersfield ones curve to ground level. The whole curve should be one piece. The curve here is definitely two parts.

I have taken liberties with the original, but does this look familiar?

Will just throw this in as a thought, the second from last picture in the original post by Stevie looks to me like the base of one of those open blast shelters for ground personnel that has been altered much later by adding the top section?
