Default RAF Collaton Cross, Devon (2 MRU)

Came across a link with a few photos of RAF Collaton Cross, 2 Medical Rehabilitation Unit, South Devon. Not much in the way of buildings but an interesting gallery nonetheless.

My father was in the Balloon Command based at Collaton Cross in 1943. I have tried to find any photos of the base before it was a MRU but no luck so far.

Hi NigelJ, I live ther now, since 1986, and from what I gather there were no buildings when it was Balloon Command. But also not many pics, if I find some I will post them.

The building with roller doors is a typical BB depot garage

There was something akin to a T2 Hangar there that I recall during Halton Summer Camp in 1961. It comes to mind because, inside, I remember seeing a Lockheed Hydraulic Servicing Rig (mentioned during training), or similar. I can't remember it's armament connection now though - Ted may know. There was also an earth-covered air-raid shelter on the far side of the field that was licenced for pyrotechnics.

Most Balloon Depots had a small explosive store for a limited stock of explosive charges that could be attached to the tether cable via a frangible link. If the balloon was struck by an aircraft the 'bomblet' was supposed to whip into the aircraft and detonate. Not too good if a friendly flew into the balloon!

I have just found a photograph of RAF company based at Collation Cross 1945.
My Father is in the photograph. He was a sergeant.
There are many signatures on the back of the photograph.
I would be interested to know more and would like to visit the site if it is still there.
