    Default Attlebridge

Hello all, Find it difficult to see that there has been no mention of this place on the forum so far ! But here we go ! Yesterday (19 02 09) I had the pleasure of a flight with a newly qualified PPL friend of mine (his first ever passenger) we overflew several Norfolk airfields, and I, armed with my camera, snapped loads of pics !!! So here are the shots of Attlebridge for your discussion ?
It is owned by the Bernard Matthews turkey empire (who possibly own more airfields than BAA) having said that we must remember that his ownership of these airfilds has preserved a lot of runways and buildings !!! Keith.

This was BM's first airfield (former employee) but the headquarters are a little way down the road at Gt Witchingham.
There are a few smaller buildings that exist at Attlebridge, mostly hidden within the trees, the control tower, watch office, still exists although extensively modified, as the local office.
This new found experience, adding hours to my friends liscense, and photographing disused airfields, seems to be yet another good thing to do ! doh !
As to the history of Attlebridge, I know very little, other than it was occupied by US squadrons during WW2 flying B24's ????

Not forgetting the RAF period in 1941/2. Was Attlebridge paved during the RAF occupation?

Opened early 1941. Runways laid spring 1941. The lengths were 09-27 at 1,220 yards, 14-32 at 1,120 yards and 04-22 at 1,080 yards.

Costain began work to enlarge the airfield and lengthen the runways in November 1942, 09-27 being extended to 2,000 yards, and both 04-22 and 14-32 to 1,400 yards. This work was completed by March 1943.

Think I'm right in saying the base sick quarters is still there having been turned into a residence. It's just round the corner from the memorial to the 466th BG USAAF.
