I went as far into the old RAF Stradishall yesterday [now HMP Highpoint], some of the buildings need a little TLC, anyway there are some pics here

I was based here from 1965-67 it was then No. 1 Air Navigation School, Strad lies between Bury St Edmunds and Haverhill and is now a closed prison with virtually nothing left of the runways or hangars. The Barrack Blocks were refurbished and are used for housing the inmates.
In my time Strad were then just disposing of its last Meteor NF14's and were being replaced with the brand new HS125 Dominie, Varsity's were the piston prop jobs.
I lived at #65 Poplar Walk diagonally opposite the guardroom, those quarters are still there
A pic courtesy of Kevin Patience is shown from the Control Tower, click on this and it will take you to others of Strad

I photographed that Seco hut in the late 1970s (or it might have been the other one, further along the ASP). Then only one hangar remained and they were taking up the runways. I got arrested by the HMP guards or what ever they are, frogmarched past the queing visitors, past the two rows of . security fencing and into some office. My camera confiscated for a short while, but I explained I will be a future member of AIX and they let me go, film and all. Got the negs somewhere.
I think Stradishall/Highpoint is an open or cat d prison. The HMP guards as you call them are Prison Officers, and they have special constable status.
The Haverhill Aviation Society meets once a month in the former Officers' Mess, which is now used as a training school for the Prison Service. There is a large memorial in front of the entrance to the Officers' Mess, now called Stirling House. I have only been there in the dark so I'm afraid I do not have any pictures of the memorial.
I checked at work and in fact its a cat c prison.

1970. Was it that long ago? Went past it in the dark in 1973. Couldn't see a thing.
Where is the board now Moggy?
