could that have been a later addition as it looks more like it would cause an obstruction to aircraft?
Jim, it would help if you gave the dimensions.

Not quite sure what you mean Richard?
This was ploughed up recently from beside the runway near to where the Flight control caravan/trailer would have stood.
Not to be confused with the big 11 foot base we found on the other side of the airfield as in this thread![]()
Aha - a possible clue. Either side of the runway here (75 yards from threshold) would be sited the Angle of Approach Indicators (Glide Path / Slope Units). I doubt that they would be stood on the grass as alignment was critical. Each one was rated at 250 watts.
There would also be a socket in the vicinity for the Floodlight (3-phase, high-current), a second socket for tower remote control (on/off) of the latter (single-phase, low-current), plus a third single-phase low-current for the floodlight obstruction light. These would be left side of runway only.
Just an idea.
Update - there's a photo in AP3236 (Works) page 541 which shows the AA Indicator. It has 3 pipe like cables at the RH end. However the text states its fed from a single 5amp 3 pin ground-mounted socket - hence I'm a bit confused.

To me it looks like the concrete block with the cable tubes (cut pipes in effect) sunken into it that you see at present runway caravan points which you would find at each threshold.
However I'm not sure how far back in time they go.
Thats a lovely photograph Denis.
Thanks for the replies so far! never fails to amaze me at the knowledge some of you chaps have!
Found the floor of this building this weekend at Hunsdon. 19' X 12'6" in Temporary Brick with no drawing number listed on the plans. To have an idea of what it resembled, can someone post a similar looking building with or without the signals Van?.
