Yes, it came as a surprise to us too!
Two of them are in rather a good shape, while number three had some internal supports removed to make space, and the four has a large crack running right through it. All are dry though despite ivy creeping through where the pot belly chimney was.
There are two more belonging to a different owner but seperated by a wall that has split the site in two. One is a barrack hut like those shown, the other was a kitchen, and apparently still has the equipment in place. I will get photos of them one day as I now know the owner of those.

Nice to see BCF huts in such good condition Dennis unlike my local examples that are crumbling & soon to be demolished.

I must get down to Hunsdon.

You would be most welcome Chris, but leave it until the winter, most of the decent stuff to see is under tons of vegetation now!

The land adjacent to the original main gate of the airfield that once contained the Guardhouse, the main Crew briefing rooms, link trainer, three Defence Unit barrack huts and a 36000 gallon Aviation fuel store, has been sold to Croudace homes.
Work started this week on clearing the site ready for building work to begin on 16 new houses. The local Parish council have put forward the name of Hempstall close for the site, this has no aviation connections whatsoever, and is the name of the land before that part of RAF Hunsdon was built on it.

The site has been cleared and Jim C and I (with permission) today carried out a sweep with metal detectors. We found absolutely zilch, but we didnt expect to find anything other than scrap as the site has had one or two uses since.

We did however get decent images of the strange pots that petertheeater identified as being demolition pots for the 36000 gallon aviation fuel store that was sited on the edge of this land. We also found and cleared the base for the fuel pump house as all of this site will be redeveloped shortly.

No sign of the base for the Main Guardhut or the double span Nissen crew briefing room and Intelligence section that stood here. But the concrete EWS may still lurk under the topsoil and rubble.

Denis, do you have a sharper version of the original wartime image I could have a look at please?
The Mossie appears to be fitted with a radar altimeter antenna under the wing...

PS, you've just been on the telly again, better chase them up for some repeat fees.

Hi all, Are there any restrictions in place at Hunsdon with regards to metal detecting?

    Yes.

The airfield is private property, and during the week and weekends is a live microlight airfield. It is constantly under the watchful eyes of the gamekeepers of Gilston Park Estates who farm the land, and the flying club. Overall the land is owned by 'Ropemakers' the pension arm of the BP Oil company.
There are no rights of way apart from those designated by Hertfordshire County Council. The woodland is managed for gamebird rearing and are 'no go' areas. There are also protected Badger colonies in the woodland.

All airfields are on someones land, and we all do our bit to ensure that we enter these places with the correct permission of the landowners or their agents. To do otherwise is against the rules of this forum and its parent organisation the ARG.

    Default Hunsdon crash

    Hi,
I have just finished Dave McIntosh's book "Terror in the Starboard Seat" (again!!) and wondered if anyone here had information regarding a fatal accident at RAF Hunsdon in 1944. I can find no record of such a loss of a 418 Sqdn. aircraft and can't find a record of the pilots lost inn this incident. Does anyone here have any information?
    Thanks

    Hello T-6
    It wasnt Hunsdon!
The book has some glaring mistakes, Jim C has complied the definitive loss list for the airfield, and this was one we have looked at closely. We are certain he has got the crash location wrong as it does not appear in the stations ORB or any of the crash records for the airfield. We believe it was at Hartford Bridge, as 418 had left Hunsdon on 21st November 44 to operate from there.
