    Just been looking at Lakenheath in Flash Earth and it looks like a few bits of the pre VHB layout still exist, including loops (the smaller ones) pans and possibly some of the hangars (T2's and a B1?). Has anyone a record of what remains from that period?

    I took a trip to the Lakenheath viewing area about a month ago, if anyone is suitably bored there are a few shots, click on the pic then either go forward or back

    There used to be a high chain linked fence in the viewing which spoilt things a bit. I used to sit out ont the roadside just to the left or right of the runway line. I am not sure if that is allowed but seeing as it is a public road. Just don't park your car in the road. Yuo used to be able to do that but it caused traffic issues.

    I don't think you can park at the end of the runway anymore. I used to go all the time in the late 80's and early 90's and park there. It was an excellent place to watch the F-111s and then F-15s.

    Last time I drove that way the verge where you could park up off the road was blocked off with huge red and white barriers. Bloody American Killjoys!

    The viewing area is just here,
    http://www.flashearth.com/?lat=52.41....1&r=0&src=msl
    It is signed off the A1065 Brandon Road

    The other place where all the spotters usually are is here;
    http://www.flashearth.com/?lat=52.41....4&r=0&src=msl
    This is a much better place for photography but you may not be able to park here due to other spotters!

    A 300mm lens should be fine for taking photos of the Eagles

    Has anyone tried taking photos from the other end of the runway recently? There is a public footpath off the Eriswell to Lakenheath road that gets you quite close to the fence from which you can get excellent photos. I haven't been there for 15+ years so don't know if it is still open. Any ideas?

    Yes, you can still walk up the footpath, parking is a different issue though as there is only one small lay-by here;

    If you do park there you can walk up the path directly opposite and get some good photos.

    Forum member DamienB has some good up to date infor on his website about spotting locations at Lakenheath;
    http://www.thunder-and-lightnings.co...akenheath.html

    There was a website that had some great spotting maps which you could download the pdf, I can't remember what the site is now but when I do I'll post it up

    Hi RUNWAY

    The tower is on an active USAF base, access is not easy and we were invited on. It was not a normal visit and very much a one off visit.
