    The handle is the crank to a hoist, possibly to lift a heavy object to the top of the tower.

    Did you get a pic from the front?
    Some towers due to their location use remote cameras to look at dispersals which are hidden from eye point. On the tower will be a receiver unit and control box, and from the back it looks like that. The mounting looks a bit overboard, but wondering if it is for azimuth and height adjustment reasons.

    I had thought the old VHB tower had been demolished. Used to work there 1949/50

    Re the signals square. It dates from the original VHB era that started 1944 although Lakenheath was only completed in 1947. It is said that the square was built over the site of the WW2 tower.

    Whereabouts in relation to the tower was the circular pit?

    Hi Mike

    The circular pit can be seen infront of the signal square in the photo above, which is infront of the VHB Tower. I thought it might have been a defensive position but it seems to be an odd place for it to be.

    The chap who was with us said the old Tower was just to the north of the VHB Tower, about here;

    Of the four VHBs built, at Marham, Lakenheath, Sculthorpe and West Raynham, all survive.
    Unfortunately I blieve Lakenheaths' example is sadly due for demolishon though. REF knows more about this.

    I'm a VHT kinda man, but even I must concede that the VHB would win hands down both in a beauty pagent and an arm wrestle match!

    On the controltowers.co.uk website it states that Heathrow also had a VHB tower.

    That is wrong, see the Heathrow and St Mawgan threads, it had a VHT. Robert Trumman is aware of this, but hasn't updated the site for a while.
