US Hospitals in the UK (AAF Use)

Wimpole Park Hospital.
Open 1942-1945, situated just north of Bassingbourn airfield.
Main unit: 163rd General Hospital, US Army.
Current status: Parkland, all traces removed.



Acton Place Hospital.
Open 194?-1945, situated just north of Sudbury airfield.
Main Unit: 136th Station Hospital, US Army.
Current status: Industrial estate, some buildings remain.



Diddington Hall Hospital.
Open 1943-1945, situated just south of Brampton Grange (8AF 1AD HQ)
Main Units: 49th Station Hospital, US Army. 2nd Evacuation Hospital, US Army.
Current status: Parkland. Other than a few yards of roadway no trace remains.

No anything about the Stowell Park one? I know lots about it as a Polish resettlement camp post war but I'm told it was a US army hospital during the war.

From the aerial photo on the English Heritage website, Stowell Park would appear to have been built as a typical EMS (Emergency Medical Service) Hospital, with the usual central reception block, two wings of parallel wards, and a seperate VD block.
So it was certainly a WWII military hospital, but I don't currently have any information on which units were stationed there.
I'll put the word out in the "usual places" that deal with this sort of thing and see what turns up.

In all cases, the top edge is north as according to Google Earth.
Any deviation from this is where the Ordnance Survey and GE disagree, and that is usually be only a degree or so, as is the case with Acton Place above.

Thanks for that Paul. It was only 1/4 mile down the road from where I grew up and we always knew it as "The Camp". I have a slightly larger, more complete aerial photo of it post war when it was the Polish re-settlement camp. I'd heard that it was a US hospital during the war but not which unit was based there.

Although it's completely overgrown now we did occasionally have a poke in the woods as kids and remember being able to see Nissen huts in amongst the trees. Sadly when I took a recent recce they've all been demolished. The only site that seems to be remaining is the sewage works.

they were 2 hospitals in bath the 152nd and 160th

185th hospital bishops lydeard
74th hospital tyntesfield house bristol
45th evacuation hospital wotton under edge
91st evacuation hospital falfield
128th evacuation hospital tortworth which is now leyhill very open go as you please prison
odstock hospital salisbury built 1942 and still has 90% of the original wards
frenchay hospital bristol 2nd and 77th evacuation hospital and 152nd station hospital
frenchay still has all the wards plus nissens and air raid shelters
main unit based was the 298th replaced in april 44 by the 100th and then the 117th
several plaques are to be found around the hospital--local knowledge my wife works there

Regarding the Acton hospital, the circled building in the image below seems to still be there. Any idea what it was or is now?

Tommy, the building you have circled above is now a cafe. I don't know what its original use was though.

I have photographed a few of the remaining buildings, http://www.airfields.fotopic.net/actonplace - I have no idea what the buildings were used for originally, if anyone can help please let me know.
