Default WELFORD - RAF Welford Base Memorials

These were taken in 1998. I'm sure that the Membury Memorial is also with these as the background looks exactly the same to me ? Always have got a bit confused around that area !!

The lowering of the flags at 10.45am to half-mast followed by a salute during this daily ceremomy. The well-weathered plaque to a 101 Squadron Lancaster that I posted somewhere before just after the dedication.

    HI)

I visited RAF Welford 5yrs ago, luckily for me & my mate we called in on a Wed, any other day & we wouldn't have got onto the base as no one from the Memorial Site would have been there, even then we had to get permission from Personnel from the RAF & the American Commander on the base. Other than taking photo's of the Memorials on site we were taken to the Memorial Hangar were they kept all there bit's & piece, even had a photo taken in the cockpit of the Dak they have in there, there was talk at the time of them moving out of the building and moving elswhere on site. We spent a few hours with them, Don Summers was one of the guys we met, grt guy, very helpful, kept in touch for a while but have lost contact now as my PC crashed with all the addresses on.

The Photo's you have taken reminded me of the time spent there all those years ago. My mate & I had been down to Chichester on the Tues, called in at Tangmere Museum & the motor race track near by were there's a bronze figure of Douglas Bader.

    Prezzie.

Thanks for that Prezzie, It was a tuesday when I called there by chance, stopped at the gate and phoned the numbers on display. They asked me what I wanted I told them that I had photographed their memorial stones before and would like to do so again. Wait there he replied I'll send someone down. After about five minutes two chaps, sorry, two Guys arrived in a large Dodge pick-up and told me to follow them, never expected that !! At the memorials they told me that they were very glad I turned-up as it got them away from washing ve-hicle's in the cold weather. They had to call-up for permission for me to photograph the flags and the lowering ceremony. There is also a small museum on the base which I intend to visit this year.

I worked here until April 2008.

The station Headquarters are in the grounds of a priory demolished hundreds of years ago.

Every year on the aniversary of the crash of the Lancaster there is a memorial service the USAF have provided a guard of honour and the Royal Air Force have also attended. In 2008 Air Marshal Sir Roger Austin KBC AFC FRAeS attended the memorial.
