I believe that this is the bulk fuel depot for the flying boats. (if this is wrong, does anyone know what it is?)

    rat256,

It is indeed an aviation fuel storage site. I suspect it was not only for Poole but all airfields in the area. There is more information on this thread under fuel depots including a 1947 aerial photo of the site.

It was probably the only fuel storage site to be permaently damaged by enemy action.

Cool... My internet research and wandering around has been proved correct!

If it was bombed, it must have gone up like a torch! I'm amazed their isn't more reportage of the fact!

    There wasn't a fire!

AP 3236 (reprint) has an account which states that a 500 kg (estimated) bomb fell near the edge of one of the C2 tanks at the point of the pipe inlets, went through the roof and probably detonated on the tank bottom. Half the roof blew off and the tank side and inlet section blew out. Some roof support columns were destroyed. Because the bomb detonated in the fuel contents there was no fire. There was no damage to adjacent tanks and spilled fuel was retained by the bund wall and most of it was recovered.

This was a WW2 incident and the censors would have ensured that details were suppressed to deny the enemy the information.

Hi, Yes this is the fuel depot as you say. The deot was bombed during the war and the Eastern unit was hit. As luck would have it, it was empty at the time and so minimal colleteral damage was caused. You can see from the picture that the shell of the Western unit is reasonably intact compared with the West side. Out of shoot to the South is a long jetty. Fuel was piped out along the jetty to the Flying Boats moored off the two arms.
