Hinstock / HMS Godwit

I have just come accross this forum for airfields and although this is very out of date, I just wanted to say that we sold HMS Godwit in 2006 and it has since been sold on again. It was used for blind flying by the Navy.

Can anyone tell me how many hangars were built at Hinstock and what types?

Also, which bit was the SLG known as Ollerton? I know it was developed and became Hinstock but how did the two airfields compare in size / location and layout?

From CB 4368A 1945.

2 Squadron 185' x 110' x 25' (Callender Hamilton

5 Squadron 91' x 67'6" x 20'4" (Super Blister)

1 Squadron 60' x 70' x 17' (Mains)

2 Squadron 60' x 84' x 17' (Mains)

Note: one large Rescue Servicing, and one large ARS hangar to be provided

I'm sure that the CHs were in fact Pentads !

Apparently this station could use Weston Park (by arrangement with MAP) for Instrument Flying Training.

Ollerton became Hinstock 23 July 1942, Dave Smith suggests to avoid confusion with Tollerton.

Sounds logical regarding the name, not the only one that had to change its name!

Do we hvae any idea on the size / area used by Ollerton SLG before it was extended to become Hinstock?

You may need a 1941/2 aerial photo to confirm layouts as I don't think any plans are kept.

Correct but I notice the IWM hold a 1941 aerial photo of Ollerton SLG. Shame you can't view it but it might be quicker to ask them.
