Situated on the side Barbury Castle hill fort is the gun butts. It has been carved out of the side of the hill. Aircraft would have to be towed quite a long way to test their cannon/machine guns.

I'm also in the Wroughton area this Friday. Is there much access? Are there many footpaths or other public rights-of-way? If not, who should I ask to gain access?

If this is on the side of the stairs and access door to the radio room, it was a signal square.

I have Wroughton listed as an Expansion Period airfield, from the aeriels though i can't make out the layout of an EP site.
Is my imformation incorrect or was Wroughton of a different time period to more conventional EP airfields. Also, what if anything remains apart from the Hangars? Any of the messes or barrack blocks??

Jason, Wroughton was a civilian manned aircraft storage unit, with only a small RAF presense. Consequently it never had domestic buildings as such. The HQ site retains 90% of its techninical buildings and all the sub-sites retain their hangars etc.
