    Default Amiens Jail Raid/Operation Jericho

Rebuilt section of Amiens Jail wall.

Old Main entrance, French Resistance memorial to right side.

I took these photo's in a hurry as I was on the way to the Somme at the time, so I apologise for the quality. Operation Jericho was quite something, although it is on the main Amiens/Albert road, it was very quiet at the time.. a very moving place.

Wow isn't that strange? Seeing the wall where there was previously a hole blown in it in an historic raid. I always thought it was in the middle of nowhere, but I guess not.

Jim C and I will be off to Amiens shortly if all goes well. If the planned trip goes ahead, we hope to visit the prison, and the graves of Pickard, Broadley and Samson.
During wartime, the prison was on the edge of town. It has been swallowed a little by development though.

I know that video tapes are a bit old hat know, but I've still got my player as possibly like many others I've got hundreds of tapes. About 2005 I bought an excellent tape about the Amiens Raid. It lasts about 40 minutes and is a tribute to FL/LT Alan ''Bill'' Broadly DSO DFC DFM. Includes interviews with friends from his school days and in the RAF.also archive film including the Amiens Raid. It concludes with the 60th anniversary of the raid at Amiens prison and St Pierre cemetery, 2004. For anyone thats interested I can pm you the name and address of the chap who compiled this tape. The price as I remember was seven pounds, fifty pence+pp.?

It's well worth the visit. Will you put the pictures on here after you've been?

I shall post one or two for certain. We planned to go around 23 Sept, but Essex Police and the DVLA are taking too long to send my driving licence back after awarding me some loyalty points. Not booked the ferry yet..or accommodation.

I really admire the wall in the first image (above).

What a labour of love for a bricklayer. None of yer temporary brick construction there!

Thanks for posting these great photos..... using google earth has given me the location.......... plan to visit this summer while in Normandy. Have held a long time interest in this particular mission. Just picked up AFTER THE BATTLE ISSUE # 28 , that details the mission with great information. Also the fine book... " The Gestapo Hunters"..an Australian work on low level Mosquito attacks in great and much is written about the raid in it.
Just found the website.....outstanding. The 352nd FG "The BlueNosers" is my group..................... been to many of the old bases in the UK of The Mighty Eighth. Very good stuff here....
