I did my AATC course here in 78(late august- early october) and after I did the course I never returned to Shawbury. Unlike a lot of AATCs I didnt go to the annual 5 a side tournament and I didnt do a radar course and I failed the aptitude test for controller training.
What I do remember was that the block we occupied was made of metal(thyeve since been demolished I believe), it worried me when we had a thunderstorm one evening! Also one night we had a heavy frost so they put the heating on next day. In fact a couple of years later it set the record for the coldest temperature recorded in England.
Yes, I went through in Nov 78...and like you, have never returned. I wish I had had a better look around while I was there though. Wednesday afternoon's was sports afternoon and we would go off to one of the hangars to play Badminton or kick a football about. The accomodation blocks were on the other side of the road, if memory serves me right and I'm of the same opinion, they've gone now.
Found this one hiding under a tree

What type of gun were these Turnbull mounts used for Peter?
The example below was salvaged from Hunsdon several years ago. I had thought watercooled Vickers 303.

As for pillboxes, I still get my type 27's mixed up with type 24's!

That's correct; but could be adapted to other types.
