Visited RAF Old Sarum on Monday and the first set of sheds is about to be turned into an aircraft museum, I have no more information than that.

old_sarun[03]800.jpgThis is the last set part of the aero clubs hangar and is in a sorry state, The nice white plane is being dripped on as we speak by a bad leak in the roof. Sheets are missing off the front as well. A real shame. The airfield looked very quite as there were no cars around parked all over the place and very few planes outside. Also sum thief's had broken into one of the offices.

So not all bad news for Old Sarum.

Part of my second week of holiday took me near here so I had a very quick look around ......here's what I saw:

Hope you enjoyed these pictures. The Belfast truss hangars are in very good condition and are all in use. The Boscombe Down aviation museum has taken over one, the others are used for aircraft storage and repair. Many buildings still remain. Wessex Archaeology have a fair share of the buildings while a lot of others are dedicated to engineering.

Interesting seeing the new and old fuel systems ....they both seem to be in working order! Love the roof construction of the hangars. There are all sorts of airfield related "bits and pieces" here...looking forward to returning with a bit more time in hand.

SOme fantastic photos Mick, really enjoyed looking at them. Old Sarum is somewhere I've not yet been to, though driven past several times! How much of the site is listed?

Hi Rich,

I dont know how much is listed but I would guess that the fact that Wessex Archeology are in severai of the buildings is a good sign. The TA barracks is there as well and all the buildings seem to be used for some purpose. This Airfield was a real surprise and a very pleasant one......would make a great visit.

Oooohhh!!! Get you with your posh new camera. Completely agree. The Hangar roof construction inside is really nice.
