    Default WAITHE - 'Black Thursday' Memorial

    Memorial stone dedicated to Four 100 Squadron crews who died as a result of the terrible conditions that existed on the night of 16/17 December 1943.
    Many aircraft of Bomber Command crashed that night due to low-lying cloud and the fog, unable to find a place to land safely.

    The memorial is located on private land and fairly close to the former airfield at Grimsby.

    The aircraft were returning from Berlin. Enemy action cost the force 25 aircraft, but 29 then crashed in the UK, with the further loss of approx 150 men, plus around 40 injured. ('Bomber Command War Diaries' states records are a little confused)

    Much of the blame for this can be attributed to the failure of the Standard Beam Approach system to provide a reliable means of getting the aircraft to the runway threshold in poor visibility.

    Some info here;
    http://www.thisisgrimsby.co.uk/news/...l/article.html

    Says Hatfield Top and also mentions Waithe, both near Waltham airfield.

    Thanks for that Graham

    I've no idea how you do that.

    The second image is on PRIVATE LAND and the track is gated near to the road, so be warned !

    A few that I took 22-06-10. Walked half a mile along a grass track in the blazing sun only to find the track that leads to the road through the OPEN gate.

    The memorial at Waithe was dedicated on Remembrance day in 2009

    These are my photos of the memorial immedaitely prior to the dedication

    You can just see Waithe Church in the treeline in the background of the centre photo

    The freestanding information boards were only there for the dedication

    Be aware this memorial is on private land. It is located next to a farm yard at the top of the rise above Waithe, accessible via a tarmaced farm road opposite the copse. The main road is the A16 which can be fast moving. The farm road is gated an the gate is normaly locked
