For all local people (around Newbury, Berks, Oxfordshire, Hampshire), I just wanted to flag up that some sites at Greenham Common will be open to the public as part of the Heritage Open Days 2012;
Greenham Lodge (Mary Hare Primary School, Mill Hall, Pigeons Farm Road, Newbury RG19 8XA). THURS Sept 7th ONLY: 10am-4pm. This was the old officers club at Greenham Common.
Also, the old decontamination site that was part of the 501st TMW Headquarters building will be open on Sat Sept 8th and the 9th. I will be doing tours of it on the Sunday morning;
Buckner Croke Way, Greenham Business Park, Newbury RG19 6HN. 10am-4pm on the Sat 8th and Sunday 9th.
I visited the site at Mildenhall one evening a couple of weeks back. Think the 'travellers' you mention could be to do with the scrap metal place down Skelton Lane. Did not look overly friendly when I drove past and one followed me down to the site
I didn't get out of the car but the fence around the site near the track appears pretty much in tact (in fact quite new) with signs warning against entry. Did not stop to take a walk around due the unexpetced company!
