Stud 8 will still be used, the chippie opposite the church
As of mid August 10 the tower is still in place but belive it will be removed soon and used as a normal portacabin somwhere on Shawbury.
A recent shot of the tower, the 344 was from a CFS course, high spirits from officers but vandalism from other ranks !!
Thata why the RAF has Airmen and not other ranks!
We now think the tower may be remaining even though all equipment has been removed, but the power is still connected !!
A photo of the tower that I took from the lane bahind on 31 May 2008
Spent many a long boring night there watching the Squirrels do night flying. The tower wasn't the same as pictured above then, it had the metal stairs on the side as I recall. I never saw the stuck C130 but the wheel ruts it dug were there for quite a while!
I remember having to set out the night landing tees as well; fine in summer but bloody cold in winter. Mind you, the advantage of winter was that it was dark so much earlier and so the night flying finished at a civilised time.
Here's a shot from a few years ago after the DH Club had a fly in.
