TEXAS - Hitchcock NAS

The US Navy had a blimp base near Galveston, Texas at Hitchcock. A few buildings remain, but most impressive is the old headquarters building as well as the four towering stanchions of the blimp hangar.

Just one. It's one that only groups such as this one would appreciate - the base water tower! It's made of cement and hurricane-proof. It's the original tower and has made it through innumerable hurricanes in its 80 years:

The area is now some sort of international trade zone with large no-trespassing signs, guard dogs and razor wire. I didn't care to venture any closer than I got in these photos.

Those guard dogs can be a bit vicous so I don't blame you really! Great to see though, just a shame you can't get much closer.

Amazing to see the stanchions still standing. Certainly give you an idae of the size of these things.

Nice pictures Tommy.

There are pictures of the hangar in it's heyday on Paul Freemans Abandoned Airfields site...this was a very large structure....made of wood.
