    Nice color photo! Looks as if it may have come from Life magazine. The airfield is that of Betio and of course was the site of the savage battle that took so many lives on both sides. The airfield is now long gone having being absorbed by native village urban sprawl. A second airfield was developed on the atoll (Mullieaux Field) which became the bomber strip and remains today as Tarawa's airport. The Gilbert Islands became the nation of Kiribati.
