Derek, welcome to AiX.
I have sent you a PM (Private Message) check the toolbar top-left and click.
Was there ever an actual control tower at Blidworth, and is there an existing photo?
kevin.
It was a Satellite Landing Ground used for the storage of aircraft and would have had a building used as a Watch Office but not a 'Control Tower' as found at operational airfields. Probably a Timber hut.
MONUMENT NO. 1419411 on Pastscape is an entry for a battle headquarters at Blidworth. Source is shown as DoB database.
Would Blidworth really have had a building set aside as a bhq?
It's quite possible. An SLG would have had a lot of valuable aircraft to protect but the manpower would hardly have been sufficient to defend against an enemy airborne/ground attack. If the NGR given is correct, the BHQ was on the corner of a small wood. That area is now covered in new (postwar) plantations and any surviving structure would be in the wood.
Thanks Peter. I have several more references to BHQs at SLGs. In no case do I have an accurate location or description. A six figure OSGB reference normally describes a 100m x 100m square NOT a point and many DoB sourced ones have been wildly inaccurate.
Can anyone post a flashearth link to Blidworth and the craft centre please?
I don't use flashearth so will this do?
