    Default Hello from North Cornwall!

    Hello everybody

i'm John Anderson and live on the Cornish coast near Tintagel. i have a background in civil aviation, but have an interest in the FAA, bombing ranges, WW2 airfields and other related sites in the south west. i am fortunate in that my house overlooks the remains of the FAA bombing range/satellite airfield at Treligga (it is surprisingly intact). i am also within a few miles of the remains of the unique RAF Davidstow Moor. i have already come across some fascinating information on the site and hope to be able to make my own contributions to the site in the future.

John, welcome to the forum. Buccaneer66 has touched on my new found interest in bombing ranges. Curiously, I was looking at Trevose Head (Gulland Rock), Port Quin and St Austell ranges only yesterday, with the help of Cornwall & Scilly HER.

Welcome John, hope you enjoy it on here.

Did you write a couple of features on Davidstow Moor and Treligga for Airfield Review a few years ago, or am I getting confused?

I'm sure you've found the thread on Davidstow already but I don't think we have one on Treligga. Is the range quadrant tower still standing? Please feel free to post any updates on your 'patch'.

    Welcome John,

I did some survey work for MAFF on Treligga some years back. Still got a 20mm shell case that a colleague found there.

    Enjoy the forum!

John/PNK - Did they really have a bombing range off Port Quin?? I didn't know that. Dived that area a couple of times blissfully unaware.

    Hi Peter

Yes it was me who wrote the Treligga/Davidstow feature in Airfield Review! The main tower at Treligga is still there, though now modified into a unique holiday let by the local famer. Rear stairs now enclosed, windows installed etc. I need to get down the hill and have a good look. The accomodation huts and equipment sheds, concrete marker bunker etc. are still there. So will update in due course.

    Hi Chris

My kids used to collect brass 20mm shell cases to sell for scrap-must be 20 years ago. Plenty still left i shouldn't wonder.

There were floating targets in the bay off Port Quin (also known as Port Isaac Bay range). There is still a quadrant tower on the cliffs between Port isaac and Port Quin.

Welcome John, would you give us the location of the surviving Quadrant Shelter which you mentioned as extant between Port Quin and Port Isaac? I thought I had plotted the QS on this coast.

Sorry for the late reply. The Cornwall at War Museum at Davidstow [next to Dairycrest] has a display on Treligga in its RNAS building. They run a slide show of wartime pictures of personnel, aircraft etc at Treligga during WW2 and have maps of the firing ranges.
If you visit on Thursday or Saturday ask for me and I'll show you around.
