Penkridge

Just to the east of Penkridge is Otherton airfield,home of the Staffordshire Aeroclub, which is on the site of what used to be RAF Penkridge. Penkridge was once a relief landing ground for 28EFTS at RAF Wolverhampton , a few miles to the south.The buildings visible in the photo just beyond the current airfield boundary are on the site of the old RAF buildings and one or two original buildings remain amongst the newer structures.It would have been nice to keep the buildings and the field together,but when the RLG closed the two areas reverted to different land owners. The history of RAF Penkridge was of course instrumental in gaining approval for flying to recommence on the site.

Just to clarify things Balliol, the official name for Pillaton was RAF Penkridge, and Pendeford was RAF Wolverhampton.
The latter was also used by Boulton and Paul for testing, and possibly temporarily used Battlestead Hill as a relief landing ground for the EFTS.

Just to confirm that Pillaton and Pendeford were the generally accepted local names for the airfields. Important to remember this.
