I went along to the fly-in today which was good, but very cold. Great to meet up with a few of the forumites too.

Default Old Buckenham - site 4

Four photos of Old Buckenham, Site 4 -- now demolished. Circa June 1996. (Two of these were published in my book "An Emotional Gauntlet")

Was out at Old Buck at the weekend and it seems the new management are improving the airfield defences :

It should certainly deter anyone trying to flee without paying the landing fee - or doing a runner from the cafe

    Haha!
By the way, who is the new management?

The new airfield manager is a chap called Matthew Wilkins. For many years Old Buck had been run by father and son Paul and William Lazell but last Summer it seems that the airfield was struggling financially and William stood down from being airfield manager. The airfield was unlicenced for a short time and there were some nasty rumours it might close and be sold off for development i.e. housing. However that didn't happen and although Mr Wilkins does not seem to have much of an aviation background he has done a lot to restore the financial fortunes of Old Buck and so far things look to be going well.

The airfield is busy - especially at weekends - when the cafe also seems to do quite well. A new business called "Battlefield Live" appears to be operating from the North side of the airfield (possibly from one of the WW2 vintage buildings) and I suspect the AA Gun may have something to do with them - but that is just a guess.

A photo of an approach to Old Buckenham yesterday (24.05.2012) on what must be the most hazy day this year so far ! from the ground, at 13:00 hrs it looked good, but as soon as we got to 1500ft it was horrible ! almost like flying in fog ! but the air temp was +20 ???? so two circuits and land !

Default RAF Airfiled "Old Buckenham" Station #144

I'm trying to locate a set of the original drawings for this airfield and am not having much luck, I've tried to contact the RAF Museum a number of times but haven't received a reply on any of my attempts. I'm working on a project for a museum for the 453rd and would greatly appreciate any help I can get on this.

    Tim
