RE ammuniton store near wetherby/walton

any one enlighting me excalty this area was. as it is a large are with many war time buildings and covered buildings. i believe it was a massive ammo dump for the surrounding area. which had its own railway going into it too

Many links on the web incorrectly state it was No.8 - that was Aycliffe. They also (including Wikipedia) incorrectly call it Thorpe Arch).

Among their products were Small Arms Ammunition and aircraft HE Bombs. It was not an 'ammo dump' they stored only the output until it was moved to the customer (Armed Forces). They did not produce the explosives and propellents or the ammunition cases, bullets and bomb casings these were all shipped in from Explosives ROFs and Engineering ROFs.

My Mother, two Aunties and my Grandmother worked there in the War. It caused a major confrontation when my Grandfather, a deputy in the Pit, found he was paid less than my Grandmother and she still had to shovel in the four free tons a year.

My final RAF tour was at Leeming in the very late '60s. By that time, Thorp Arch was used as a Trading Estate and I visited one year to buy (wholesale) prizes for the Sergeant's Mess Christmas Draw.

I spent more time exploring and taking photographs than 'shopping, leaving that to my colleagues' It was pretty much unchanged then, the traders simply moving in and utilising the existing buildings.
